Upgrades

1. Ensure Systems Are Being Followed

  • Ask yourself if the team is running systems correctly.
  • Observe instructors teaching lessons to ensure they know the system.
  • If needed, retrain the team on proper systems. This includes yourself.

2. Inspire and Energize Instructors

  • Ensure instructors are excited and passionate about teaching.
  • Instructors should be trained regularly (private sessions every 7-9 days).
  • Even black belt instructors should continue learning new strategies and techniques.
  • Instructor energy is critical for engaging both students and parents.

3. Pre-Frame Students for Upgrades

  • Pre-frame the Student: Talk to the student (e.g., “I think you could be in our Blackbelt Training Program. Do you believe in yourself like I do?”).
  • Pre-frame the Parent: During class, speak to the parent about the child’s progress and ask how they feel about an upgrade.
  • Use certificates of acceptance to let parents know the student is eligible for a higher-level program.
  • Call parents in advance to prepare them for a special recognition (e.g., a certificate presentation).

4. Create Excitement Around Progress

  • Present the certificate and invite the student to Black Belt training in front of the class to create excitement.
  • Recognize students for their hard work (e.g., grades, improvement).
  • For students who aren’t ready yet, schedule a progress check anyway and continue the upgrade conversation.

5. Build Relationships and Trust

  • Ensure instructors build strong relationships with both the students and parents.
  • When parents trust the instructor and see value in the program, they’re more likely to commit to upgrades.

6. Use the Power of Public Recognition

  • Present upgraded students in front of the class, making the achievement a big deal.
  • This encourages other students to desire the same achievement, increasing future upgrade potential.
  • Do the same for adult students—make their upgrade feel special.

7. Highlight Black Belt Training Students

  • Make sure Black Belt Training students are visibly recognized in class.
  • Allow them to perform advanced tasks (e.g., board breaking, sparring, weapon training) in front of basic training students.
  • Let basic training students observe the special activities of Black Belt students to increase desire for progression.
  • Treat Black Belt students as role models and highlight their commitment.

8. Use These Tips Consistently

  • Consistently implement these steps to build a positive environment where upgrades feel natural.
  • After a while, the percentage of upgrades will naturally increase with proper systems and engagement.

This approach combines system management, instructor enthusiasm, strategic pre-framing, and public recognition to encourage more upgrades.
