Screen-Free Discipline

The Screen-Free Discipline Mass Intro

Arrivals

  1. Greet parents at the front door. Have them fill out a consultation form.
  2. Hand a board to each parent at the beginning of class with a sharpie. Tell them to think about a goal that they have for their child and write it on the board. On the other side of the board, write one thing their child has to overcome or work on. Examples: being more disciplined, cleaning their room, helping with chores.

Introduction

Introduce Yourself

Parents, thank you so much for coming out today for our “Mass Intro Theme.” Welcome to Cosens Martial Arts. My name is Coach _________.

Introduce Your Help

Before we start, I just want to introduce some people who are going to be helping us out today. Everybody say, “Hi Coach _______.”

Pre-Frame That a Sales Talk Will Happen

Parents, again, thank you so much for coming to our event. I know a lot of you called asking questions about our event today, asking how much the classes are, and asking what happens if your child wants to continue. I told some of you over the phone that I would just address it with everybody at the class.

For those of you who are interested, and by the way, we would love to have all your kids train, today is about a free class. What I would like to do today is just focus on the Mass Intro Theme class.

And if it is okay with everybody, at the end, we have decided that we will announce a special for those of you who are interested.

Is that fair?

Go Over the Rules

Before we start, I would like to tell you about some rules that we have here in our school. Unlike the public schools and anywhere in the outside world where there is peer pressure, bullying, and name calling, when you step through our door, it is all positive reinforcement.

So while we are doing the class today, they are going to look over at you sometimes just to make sure that you are watching and paying attention. When they look over at you, give them a thumbs up and say good job. Let them know how good they are doing.

We are constantly boosting their confidence. We want to make these kids feel like they can conquer the world and teach them to be confident. That is rule number one.

Number two. If you have a cell phone, please put it on silent or vibrate because we really want to give all the attention to our kids. I know your kids are all very focused, but a lot of kids are not. Right, parents?

If you have any small children who get restless, please stand up, walk around, or take them outside, but I will need you all back in here because I will need the parents to be in here for what we do at the end with your children.

Does anyone have any questions?

So without further ado, let’s give a big round of applause for your kids! Give them some energy!

Standard Warm-Up

Setting the stage for the class.

  • Set Stance
  • Goal Setting Chat: Breaking a board is the goal today, not earning the white belt.
  • Jumping Jacks
  • Respect Chat
  • Jumping Jacks
  • Self-Defense Chat with students
  • Self-Defense Chat with parents

Technique: Jab

Drill: The Pop-Up Notification

Have the kids stand in their set stance. The coach holds a single pad or noodle. When the coach flashes the pad quickly, the kids must fire a lightning-fast jab and instantly snap it back to protect their face.

The Coaching Hook: Explain that the jab has to be faster than a phone notification popping up on a screen. They hit the target and instantly reset their guard.

Technique: Cross

Drill: The Power Down

The coach holds a pad. On the whistle, the kids step and fire a massive, driving cross to “power down” the target.

The Coaching Hook: This punch represents turning off the TV or closing the tablet with absolute speed and power when Mom or Dad says it is time to clean up.

Mat Chat: The Screen Trap vs. Self-Discipline

Lock it up! Sirs and Ma’ams, your jab and cross today look incredibly fast and powerful. But martial arts is not just about having powerful muscles. It is about having a powerful mind.

Today, our big goal is all about self-discipline. Raise your hand if you know what self-discipline means.

It means doing what you are supposed to do, when you are supposed to do it, without being told.

Right now, there is a giant trap trying to steal your self-discipline. It is the Screen Trap: video games, iPads, and TVs.

When your parents say, “Hey, turn off the game, it is time for dinner,” what does a lazy mind do? It whines, complains, or says, “Just five more minutes!”

But a martial artist with self-discipline has a brain that moves just like your jab and cross: fast, focused, and immediate.

When screen time is done, you power it down the very first time you are asked. Who thinks they have the discipline to beat the Screen Trap today?

Awesome. Stand up. Set Stance!

Technique: Cover

Drill: The Distraction Dodge

The coaches walk through the lines swinging soft foam noodles horizontally at head level. The kids must eye-lock the coach, drop their weight, and lock in tight to let the noodle slide off their guards.

The Coaching Hook: The noodles represent digital distractions, like video game invites or YouTube loops, trying to hit them in the brain when they are supposed to be focusing on homework or chores.

Mat Chat: The Brain Shield

You guys just used your arms to build a shield that blocked those noodles. In life, video games, apps, and lazy thoughts are like those noodles. They are distractions trying to punch you in the brain and steal your focus.

If you do not have a shield up, those screens will control your mind, make you lazy, and make you push back against your parents.

But when you activate your Brain Shield, you block out the laziness. You stay completely in control of your own choices.

A black belt does not let a screen rule their life. A black belt rules their own actions.

Technique: Front Kick

Drill: The Screen Smasher

A coach or parent holds a large square shield or kicking pad. The kids line up, chamber their knee high, and execute a driving front kick right through the center of the pad, pushing the pad-holder back.

The Coaching Hook: The kick represents smashing through lazy habits and choosing discipline instead of screens.

Mat Chat: The Breakthrough

We have had an amazing lesson today, but a true martial artist does not just fight on the mats. They fight bad habits at home.

Your parents love you too much to let you stay stuck in front of screens. That is why, right before this class, your parents secretly wrote down the exact bad habit they need you to break on the back of your board.

When your parent holds this board up for you, that bad habit is standing right in front of you.

You have two choices: you can let that lazy habit win, or you can use your new self-discipline to smash it to pieces.

We are going to lock in our focus and blast right through that obstacle. Stand up, find your parent, and let’s break those bad habits!

Board Break Session

With Parent Holding Board

The Action: Parents stand on the floor holding the real wooden boards at target height. The child takes their set stance, visualizes their goal, and executes the cross or palm strike to cleanly snap the board while the room cheers.

Bring up 2 to 3 parents at a time. You want people in the audience to cheer.

Preparing for the Close

Have the kids go huddle up with the assistant instructor on the other side of the room to keep them occupied.

The assistant instructor then asks:

Who wants me to sign your board and put the date on it?

As they are doing this, they ask questions:

Did you have fun today?

What was your favorite part?

Would you guys like to come back and keep doing martial arts?

Well, if you had fun, make sure you tell Mom and Dad you want to sign up.

The Close

Affirmative #1: Parents, do you think they had a lot of fun out there today?

Affirmative #2: Do you think they learned something?

Parents, again, thank you so much for being here today. I know you took time out of your day to bring your child to our event. I know a lot of you were asking about how much the classes are.

So for those of you who are interested, normally, if you were to come to our school and wanted to sign yourself or your child up, it would be $195 down and 6 payments of $206.

But if you are interested in enrolling today, it is only $50. That includes the down payment, the first month, a uniform for your child, and as many family members as want to join.

Parents, if you are interested, we also have a great adult program.

Again, if anyone wants to join today, it is only $50 and it covers anyone in the family who wants to join. Moving forward, instead of 6 payments of $206, it is just 5 payments of $188.

We also have a great family plan. Once you pay for two members, all additional immediate family members are free.

If you have any questions or would like to get started today, please just come see one of us.

Again, thank you for bringing your kids today. We are going to have a pizza party. There is enough for everybody, so please help yourself to some pizza. We do not want to take any home with us.

Let’s give the kids one more big round of applause.

After the Close

The instructor in the back with the kids stands up, takes the kids over, and starts getting pizza for them. After that, they go stand at the front desk waiting for parents to approach the desk.

One instructor goes to the front desk while the other walks around fielding questions and asking:

Do you want to take advantage of the special and get the uniform today?

If they say yes, fit the child for the uniform, conduct enrollment procedures, and sell merchandise packages.
